  • International project

Pilot demonstration project for climate change adaptation in agriculture and the application of sustainable practices in North Macedonia

    Programme:
Project supported by the Regional Climate Partnership between Germany and the Western Balkans, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH
    Role of the Faculty:
    partner

With the support of the Regional Climate Partnership between Germany and the Western Balkans and in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Food of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje and the Faculty's Experimental Field carried out a project activity to establish a pilot demonstration field for climate change adaptation in agriculture and the application of sustainable practices in North Macedonia. Within the project, modern equipment was procured and installed: irrigation systems for field and fruit crops, control units for automated irrigation management, fertigation and filtration systems, solar-powered pumping systems, anti-frost equipment that protects the plantings from low temperatures, and protective nets against hail and UV radiation.

The project tests and promotes innovative, digital and climate-smart technologies and practices that make agricultural production more resilient, so that drought, heat stress and other climate challenges can be met more effectively. Through practical demonstration events and cooperation between academia, farmers, companies, institutions and civil society, the project helps to build capacity and to promote sustainable agriculture. Some 150 farmers took part in the demonstration events organised together with the National Federation of Farmers and showed interest in the measures and technologies applied on the experimental field.

The project also includes an economic assessment of the proposed adaptation measures, to establish whether they pay off and how widely they could be applied. The project is a practical platform for innovation, the exchange of knowledge and the development of climate-resilient agriculture in North Macedonia and the wider Western Balkan region.

The Faculty is one of the leading partners in the project and coordinates honey bee breeding, the second work package (WP2: Adaptation of Breeding Strategies for Resilient Beekeeping). A significant part of the research is carried out in the apiaries and in the Faculty's Laboratory of Honey Bee Biology and Breeding.

The consortium, coordinated by Dr Cecilia Costa of the Italian Agricultural Research Council (CREA), has 27 partners from 16 countries: scientists, beekeepers and beekeeping associations, consulting and technology companies. The project provides sustainable beekeeping practices, novel breeding strategies, and digital and forecasting tools that will allow the beekeeping sector to adapt to a changing environment.

For the Faculty, after taking part in COLOSS-GEI, MacBee, SMARTBEES, EurBeST and BeeConSel, the project continues its work on the genetic improvement and protection of honey bee populations.
