Research focuses on the husbandry of domestic animals (cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry), beekeeping and pets, the biodiversity of animal genetic resources, animal and fish nutrition, the technology of producing and processing products of animal origin, applied biochemistry and genetic engineering in livestock production, and animal health and welfare. The Institute also works on modern husbandry systems, optimising nutrition, developing dairy and meat products, protecting indigenous breeds and traditional products, and ensuring the safety and quality of production.

The Institute runs an accredited laboratory for animal feed analysis, a laboratory for milk and dairy products and a GMO laboratory, which are used in both teaching and research.
