The Faculty is one of the oldest higher-education institutions in Macedonia and, together with the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Philosophy, one of the founders of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

The Faculty began its work in 1947 under the name Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.

Twenty-eight years later, two independent faculties emerged from this faculty: the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Forestry.

In 2004 the Faculty of Agriculture was renamed the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Food – Skopje.

Who we are

The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Food was established on 16.12.1947 and is one of the founders of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. Over its long tradition the Faculty has carried out fruitful teaching, research and applied work and has cooperated actively with related institutions at home and abroad. In terms of its staff and equipment, the Faculty is a leading institution in agriculture and food.

Our imperative

The demand for food and for crops for industrial processing – and, more recently, for biofuel – grows every day. Standards for their production are being strictly introduced and regulated. Today agriculture relies on modern technology and new methods and techniques. At the same time, the sustainable use of natural resources and environmental protection are a global priority. In line with these processes, the Faculty's imperative is to shape an academic profile with the expertise to meet the demands of modern agricultural production.

Our goals

  • Offering studies that shape an academic profile with the knowledge and skills needed for profitable production and the management of natural resources.

  • Providing scientific staff able to take part successfully in research in agriculture, food and the environment.

  • Providing professional staff technically trained to make quick and sound technological decisions in the production of food and raw materials and in organising and managing production.

  • Implementing the Bologna principles in teaching and shaping a model of European education.

  • Modernising the buildings, laboratories, equipment and staff for teaching and research, as the basis for high-quality education and expertise.

  • Technology transfer through close cooperation with agricultural producers, processing facilities and related institutions.

Vision

  • Integration into European education

  • Cooperation with other educational and scientific institutions

  • Student and teaching staff mobility

  • Education and specific training for staff working directly in agricultural production, the food industry, agricultural development agencies, non-governmental organisations and the government institutions that shape agricultural policy

Message from the Dean

Young engineers are our future…

Portrait of Mile Markoski
Prof. Dr Mile Markoski, Dean of the Faculty

The agronomic profession faces many challenges. It is at a turning point because of the global crisis and the ever-growing need to produce food in line with environmental standards, as set out in the EU Green Deal. Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to Europe and the world.

New technologies have made people more and more the managers of every process, in primary production as well as in the processing industry and food production.

Although it may seem that this is not something one can study, the reality is quite different. There will always be work in agriculture, and its development will always adapt to people's needs. That is exactly why, more than ever, the country needs young experts – agricultural engineers.

Studies at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Food – Skopje are organised in 10 accredited first-cycle (undergraduate) study programmes.

From the 2024/2025 academic year, for the first time in the 77 years of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Food – Skopje, we are accrediting a new study programme – interdisciplinary studies in Digital Agriculture, the only one of its kind in the country. The programme is supported by several faculties of UKIM (FINKI, FEIT, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics) and is a challenge for all young people drawn to the natural sciences, information technology, mechanical engineering and automation.

The world needs a system of sustainable food production that uses land, water and other resources more efficiently and so reduces the use of fossil fuels, drastically cutting gas emissions and the greenhouse effect, preserves biodiversity and reduces the amount of waste…

The rapid growth of the world's population, the development of industry and technology and the increasing use of natural resources create serious environmental problems that threaten humanity. That is why only by applying and combining modern technologies from different fields will we be able to optimise production processes and increase yields, while at the same time speaking of sustainable agriculture that provides food today and leaves room for future generations.

To overcome these challenges, the concept of precision agriculture has already been developed: it combines fields of different sciences in order to optimise yields while reducing the negative effects on the environment. That is why investing in the education of young people, in science and in research should be a priority for the state.

All study programmes of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Food – Skopje have their own particular competences, but all are equally important for our country's economy, and after graduation they open up employment in many different sectors.
