Laboratory

Laboratory of Plant Genetic Resources and Documentation

The laboratory is designed for the conservation, inventory, documentation, organisation, management and maintenance of plant genetic resources. As seed quantities may be limited, it functions as a specialised unit for the conservation, inventory and documentation of plant genetic resources rather than as a classic gene bank. Its facilities include storage of seed and other biological material in refrigerators, freezers and -80 °C freezers, where this is needed for a specific type of material or for the long-term conservation of selected samples.

Analyses

  • organising and maintaining seed collections
  • conservation of limited quantities of seed from valuable plant material
  • storage of seed material in refrigerators and freezers
  • use of -80 °C freezers for selected material that must be stored at ultra-low temperatures and for storing DNA
  • monitoring the available seed material
  • preparing and maintaining sample inventories
  • passport data management
  • management of characterisation and evaluation data
  • documentation of seed lots and plant material
  • labelling and coding of samples
  • preparing material for regeneration
  • preparing material for multiplication
  • preparing material for field trials, controlled experiments and laboratory analyses
  • monitoring seed availability, viability and conservation status
  • monitoring the need for regeneration
  • integration of passport, phenotypic, genotypic, photographic, seed and quality data and data on stress resistance/tolerance
  • documentation of indigenous populations, local varieties, commercial varieties, breeding lines, mutant lines, segregating populations, wild relatives, genetic material and other plant genetic resources
  • documentation and cataloguing of historical or archaeological plant material where such samples are available
  • linking modern samples with historical, traditional or archaeological information on origin, distribution, domestication, use and diversity
  • supporting germplasm exchange, research projects, breeding programmes, mutation breeding, conservation, diversity studies and the management of plant genetic resources
  • preparing per-sample records, which can integrate passport data, seed data, photographs, phenotypic data, molecular data, quality data and stress-response data
