Laboratory

Laboratory of Phenotyping and Image Analysis

The laboratory is designed for morphological, agronomic and image-based characterisation of plant material, seeds, leaves, fruits, flowers and other plant organs. Phenotyping is carried out through laboratory measurements, imaging systems, studies under controlled conditions and evaluation on the experimental field. Plastic tunnels on the experimental field serve as supporting field facilities for evaluation, phenotyping, selection and testing under semi-controlled conditions.

Analyses

  • morphological characterisation of plant material
  • agronomic evaluation of genotypes
  • measuring traits of the plant, leaf, seed, flower, fruit, root and other organs
  • digital photo-documentation
  • seed imaging and seed morphometric analysis
  • leaf imaging and trait analysis
  • measuring seed size, shape, colour, surface characteristics and uniformity
  • measuring leaf area, shape, colour, damage and visible changes
  • image-based comparison of genotypes, treatments, environments and stress responses
  • phenotyping of indigenous populations, local varieties, commercial varieties, breeding lines, mutant lines, wild relatives and conserved samples
  • screening mutant lines for altered morphology, growth habit, seed traits, yield components, adaptive traits and stress response
  • phenotypic characterisation of material created through mutation breeding
  • assessment of visible responses to biotic and abiotic stress
  • use of a hand seeder for precise and uniform placement of experimental material in field trials, plastic tunnels and other experiments for characterising and evaluating genotypes
  • setting up uniform experimental plots for phenotyping, selection, conventional breeding, mutation breeding and evaluation of responses to biotic and abiotic stress
  • evaluation of plant material in polytunnels on the experimental field
  • photo-documentation of plant development, symptoms, damage, differences in growth and morphological variability
  • preparing photo-documentation for databases, catalogues, reports, publications and breeding records
  • phenotypic and morphometric characterisation of historical or archaeological seeds, grains, fruits, leaves or other plant remains where preservation allows imaging, measurement and comparison
  • comparison of historical, traditional and modern plant material for research on the morphology, domestication, diversity, adaptation and use of crops
  • supporting breeding, characterisation, diversity studies, mutation breeding, conservation biology and breeding programmes
