From 4 to 7.10.2023 Sarajevo hosted a large international conference entitled “Applied Biotechnology for 2030 Agenda”, organised by the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Sarajevo under the patronage of the United Nations International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. Some 20 representatives of developing countries, mainly from Africa and Asia, took part, and the speakers included eminent scientists from the USA, Italy, Sweden, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia. The invited speaker from our country was Professor Zoran T. Popovski, who presented his own experience on “Zero waste from agriculture and food processing”.
In his lecture Prof. Popovski presented the results of research he has taken part in: recycling blood waste from slaughterhouses and producing a range of by-products, recycling farm waste and producing biogas, using food waste to isolate enzymes for treating wastewater, using GM plants in soil bioremediation, using coffee waste to produce essential oils and other products, and more. The conference also included several workshops demonstrating a number of experiments, at which Professor Popovski showed some simple experiments related to his lecture. Besides this topic, the conference covered applications of biotechnology in medicine, pharmacy, agriculture and other fields.
Finally, Prof. Popovski received an award for his contribution to this important international event, at which our Faculty was also presented.
